Mom On A Mission!

Post Published: 19 January 2010

This past Friday we received some news that affected our household finances greatly.  This meant that my husband and I had to some major reworking/cutting of our budget.  When super-couponing first started to catch my eye last year, all I can tell you is that it kept nudging at me that this was something that I needed to learn and I have to say the news we received on Friday made me so thankful/greatful that I had taken the steps forward to pursue it.  On Friday I became determined that with my knowledge of couponing, that my goal for the week was to see what and how much I could add to my household stock of groceries for as cheap as possible and even free.  42cents (Small)

Everything that you see in the picture above cost me 42 cents.  The 42 cents I spent was the tax on the items while my coupons and double coupons covered the full price of these items – basically they were free!  This is only one snapshot though.  If I took a picture of everything I purchased yesterday, I spent $1.18 (tax) and saved $77.98.  Let me lay out everything else I got this week:

Starkist tuna pouches (free)

Chips Ahoy cookies (free)

Nestle Tollhouse Cookie Dough (free)

Jiffy Pop Microwave Popcorn (free)

Halls Cough Drops (free)

Planters Nuts (free)

Quaker Rice Cakes (free)

Tree Top juice boxes (free)

Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes (59 cents/box)

Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Cereal (74 cents/box)

Tillamook 2lb blocks of cheese ($1.99)

Danimal Crush Cups yogurt (49 cents/4pack)

Bar-S hot dogs (39 cents)

La Victoria Salsa (12 cents a jar)

Campbells Healthy Choice soup (28 cents/can)

Kraft Macaroni and Cheese (44 cents/box)

I have probably forgotton something on here, but you get the idea.  You should have seen my husband’s face when he saw all my purchases and told him what I spent.  I guess you could say I am a little determined to make the most of the situation and regardless of the economy I am going to keep a positive attitude!  Some of you may already have life situations facing you know, while others may not know what situations may present to you in the future.  However, you can arm yourself with knowledge and skills that can help you make the most of those times.

Did You Think That Baby Einstein Would Increase Your Child’s Intelligence?

Post Published: 15 January 2010

I first heard about this when the blogs were down.  There is a lawsuit and a voluntary recall on the Baby Einstein movies due to marketing that claimed these movies could raise your child’s intelligence level.  The AAP came out with a recommendation in 1999 that children under the age of 2 should not be exposed to TV.  As I mentioned in my last post, there many different theories on parenting and choices to make, and this happens to be one of them.

I received “Baby Mozart” as a gift from a friend when my 7 year old was a couple of months old.  It was probably a few weeks later when after putting him in his swing I put it on for him.  I was amazed how interested and entertained at such a young age he was.  I could now take a shower, get some work done around the house and get dinner made!  My oldest son wasn’t quite 2 ½ when my middle son was born.  So here it is, here is my confession that I am guilty of letting my children watch these movies before they were 2 years old.  I even purchased new Einstein videos as they came out to offer new versions of entertainment for them.  I did not purchase them thinking that they would make my boys more intelligent, but for the break it gave me to get other small accomplishments done around the house as well as for the sheer enjoyment they seemed to get watching them.    Baby Einstein soon became a part of his life too.  However, this is not what has dominated their lives.  We have always made mornings our time to get out of the house and either get some errands done or do something fun like going to the park.  At home our house has been overtaken by toys and our back yard is a wonderful play place where they have been known to even slip out through the dog door a time or two.

My youngest son has not seen as much of Baby Einstein due to his older brothers’ movie preferences.  He is more into Buzz Lightyear and Woody.  So I have to be honest, when I heard about the recall on the movies, I didn’t run over to the movie cabinet to get them and send them back to the company to have my money returned.  Somehow, I think that if down the road I look back and I feel that letting my boys watch Baby Einstein movies was the worst parenting decision I made, I think I will be able to live with myself.

My Little Soap Box – Please Fasten Your Baby In!

Post Published: 13 January 2010

It has taken me almost a week to sit down and write this post as I needed to take some deep breaths and regain my composure.  I am going to start off by saying that in most things in life and with parenting, there are many ways of doing things.  I don’t believe most of the time that everyone should everything the same way.  You have to do what works best for your family.  This having been said, sometimes it is even different from child to child.  However, there are certain situations in which there are clear answers, such as when it affects the safety of a child.

Last week I was in a parking lot of a store when I witnessed a mom driving with her infant on her lap.  The baby looked to be no more than a month or two old.  I was in shock and had to do a double take.  I have to add that the baby was not crying.  However, even if the baby had been crying, I still do not think that is a defense for holding your baby and driving.  You pull off the road or into a parking place and attend to your baby.  I do not believe you can drive safely and attentively, and care for a baby.  Not to mention how you would manage to hold onto the baby in crash.  I called in to our local Safe Kids office to discuss the situation with them and was given some very useful information.  If you are in a crash/accident and are trying to hold onto a baby you would have to multiply the weight of the baby by the speed at which the crash occurred at.  To put this into perspective, if baby weighs 10lbs and you are going 30mph, this would be like trying to restrain 300lbs!  If you were to add  yourself into the equation if you were not wearing your seatbelt, then you have to take your weight multiplied by the speed and add it in.  Well, you say, she was just in a parking lot.  She was in a parking lot driving towards Blue Lakes Blvd.  Also many crashes occur in parking lots and most crashes occur in close proximity to one’s home.  None of these are defenses.

I will be honest with you and tell you that I almost called 911.  Now, after talking with Safe Kids, what I will do in the future is call dispatch for the TFPD and give them a license plate number and explain the situation.   How would you handle this situation?

Who Would Have Thought…….

Post Published: 05 January 2010

……….that my expired coupons would provide my 2 oldest boys with hours of entertainment and learning too?  When I started learning how to coupon on a serious basis, there was a day when I laid out all of my coupons to organize and set up my coupon binder.  It was then that my 7 year old asked me what I was doing.  I explained to him that I was organizing all of my coupons.  He followed by asking me why?  I then explained that using coupons was going to help us to save money and to be able to buy more than before.  As the past few weeks have gone by he has started asking me anytime I buy something, whether or not I used a coupon for it.

It was on Saturday, as I sat going through my coupon binder pulling out the expired coupon, that he asked me if he could have them.  Before I knew it he had found his builder’s apron, put it on, and was putting the coupons into the pockets.  By then my 4 year old wanted to know what he was doing.  He explained the coupons to his little brother and I told him that he needed to share.  They spent the next 3 hours (I’m not kidding) playing store with my expired coupons adding up how much they could save and what things would cost.  They even set up a store.  People always joke about how the boxes that things come out of end up being better entertainment for kids than their toys.  It now seems that expired coupons have become this kind of entertainment for my boys and I am certainly not going to complain!

An Amazing Offer!

Post Published: 04 January 2010

I just wanted to let any of the readers that are interested in learning how to get into couponing and saving some serious money (60-80%), that Nicole from Cassia Coupon Gals has made an incredible offer.  She posted on her blog yesterday, that she is willing to do free coupon classes for people in the months of January and February.  She came to my house in November and did an amazing class/presentation.  If your are interested, you can e-mail her at coupongals@live.com  Because she has to travel from Burley to do this, she is requesting that you try to get a group of at least 10 people together for a class.  She is also responsible for getting us couponers a really good deal with the Times News called the “Coupon Clipper Deal”.  This includes a daily subscription to the paper and 5 Sunday copies of the paper (where you will get alot of your coupons), for as low as $18.00 a month if you pay monthly.  I am now doing this and because of the money I am saving, I am able to take this amount out of my weekly budget easily once a month to cover the subscription.

Changing The Way You Think

Post Published: 28 December 2009

So as I share my journey with you on learning how to save maximum dollars on couponing, I have to start out by saying that none of these are my own original concepts.  The information I share with you, I have learned from a variety of blogs (to which I try to add their links on the side of this blog), a couple of wonderful women: Connie  and Nicole, and from a book “Pick Another Check Out Lane Honey”.

I used to shop mainly at Winco and Costco.  It is true that Winco’s prices are lower if you are shopping without coupons, but as you get into serious couponing the stores that I used to think were too expensive to go to are becoming my favorites for the best deals in savings.  I am now shopping at Albertson’s, Walgreens, and Smith’s.  Serious couponing involves combining your coupons with a stores’ sale, their coupons, and manufacturers coupons.  If you are buying things that are already on sale and using coupons, possibly doubling your coupons, and earning catalina’s and register rewards it is amazing how cheap you can get things.  Winco does not run the sales that these other stores do and Costco only takes Costco coupons.  Did you know you can “stack” coupons?  This involves using a manufacturer’s coupon and store coupon together.  You can use more than one coupon on an item!  You can also take advantage of sales that have buy 1 get 1 free (B1G1) and use 2 coupons.  This means you can use a coupon on the item you are getting for free.  Example: Fred Meyer’s had a toy sale on Potato Heads a month ago where I got Mr & Mrs Potato Head and 2 sets of Spud Buds on a B1G1 sale and used 4 coupons.  My final price on all 4 items was $5.06.  My 17 month old son received these for Christmas and I have an extra set of Spud Buds to use as a birthday present for one of his friends.

Now if you are like me, you are asking what a catalina or register reward is.  When I first heard catalina, I had to google the word to learn what it meant.  A catalina or register reward is a coupon that is dispensed from a machine at the register that may be in the form of a coupon for a product, but quite often are in dollar amounts towards you next purchase.  That means they are like cash the next time you go through the store.  So for my next transaction, the cashier would ring up my transaction, then I would hand them my coupons to deduct and then hand them my catalina/register reward to take of the total further reducing the amount of my transaction.  This really adds up for some big savings!

You also have to change the way you think about shopping.  You don’t make your shopping list based on what you need to make meals for a week or stop at the store to just pick up what you need for dinner.  You are going to shop sales and start stockpiling so that you will do meal planning of you shelves at home.  It can take a month or two to build your stock as the sale items rotate, but just be patient and trust that it will work.  This means you will buy your sale items to stock with and add in your fresh produce each week to supplement the items you are stocking on.  My first major coupon shopping trip was made only 5-6 weeks ago and I am shocked at the stock I have built up.  My husband is excited too and has been very helpful in getting my shelves arranged in the basement and in organizing our freezer.  The kids are enjoying items that I wouldn’t buy before because they seemed frivolous and too expensive.  I am buying brand name and am getting things cheaper than before.  I am saving a minimum of 60% on my purchases and as I get better I am saving over 80% on transactions.  A week ago, I even managed to get some of my items for free (with the exception of sales tax), after buying sales items and doubling my coupons!  Each week I am doing this it is getting easier and quicker.  While there is a little time involved I am finding that the amount I am saving is more than worth it.

Merry Christmas!!

FestivalTree [640x480]

We are keeping our Christmas simple.  There has been no last minute running around today.  We have been hanging out with family at home.  There are no presents under the tree yet.  This is not where we want our focus to be.  In a couple of hours we will go to our church’s candlelight service.

In the morning the excitement will start early I’m sure as the kids wake us to go downstairs to check out the stockings and see if there are presents.  There will be a fresh pot of candy cane coffee brewing and I will make the biscuits and sausage gravy recipe I posted on here a few months ago.

I hope you aren’t getting caught up in the rat race today and are able relax and enjoy your Christmas with your children and grandchildren.  Merry Christmas!

Why I Am Not A “Martha Stewart” Mom

Post Published: 17 December 2009

So what I mean by a “Martha Stewart” mom, is a mom that is not the most accomplished baker and that is why when it comes to my children’s parties’ (both birthday’s and school parties), the store is my friend.  I do not bake my own birthday cakes for my kids and I actually see this as a good thing for them.  Sometimes you just have to realize your weaknesses.

This week I had to be reminded of this.  You see, I am helping with my oldest son’s 1st grade Christmas party.  Since I had scored a really good deal in my couponing on some pre-made sugar cookie dough I gained some false confidence.  I thought I could handle making for the party said cookies in cute Christmas designs and decorating them.  As I was rolling out the cookie dough yesterday, the thought running through my head was “I think I am falling in love with Pillsbury”.  As I was thinking this, I should have known it was too good to be true.  As I placed the cookies in the oven I set the timer and was ready to conquer the decorating of the cookies.  Alas, as the time came and I pulled the cookies out of the oven, my cute little trees, angels, and stars had turned into unrecognizable blobs.  Not when I envisioned.  My 4 year old was eager to test and assured me that they tasted great.  The boys and daddy will be able to enjoy these at home and I think I will be making a trip to the store to pick up something more visually appealing for the party.

I think that what counts more to my kids is that I am there for them and sometimes the time involved in making something from scratch isn’t worth the stress.  I will enjoy my son’s party so much more being there with him and his friends rather than worrying about being the artist creating the perfect cookies for the party!!

Just to give you an idea of how my couponing is going I wanted to show you this picture.  Here I purchased 4 boxes of Di Giorno Flat Bread Melts, 28 cans of Progresso Soup, and 2 bags of potatoes.  Any guesses on what this cost me?  I spent $13.87 out of pocket and saved $95.10 for a total savings of 87%.  Plus I received a $5 catalina to go back to the store with next time!!  You can do this too.  Have I caught your attention yet?

One Of Those Moments….

Post Published: 13 December 2009

……that makes you proud!!  Since my last post was about one of those more stressful situations as a mom, this one is on a more positive note.

You see, my oldest son kind of had a rough week for a variety of reasons and this morning after church, he was pretty emotional.  He was crying and my middle son saw how sad he was.  So what did he do?  He walked over to his big brother, wrapped his arms around him, hugged onto him tight, and told him it was going to be ok.  These two love to bug each other, but this showed that in a moment that he saw his brother in need of support, he was there for him!
